Moru Curry

Moru stands for butter milk in Malayalam and as the name suggests this is a simple and easy to make yogurt recipe. It goes very well with rice. In fact, this curry tastes even better when made a day ahead! It is a staple in any Kerala household. It is similar to the kadhi served with rice in other parts of India, the only difference being this is more sour in taste and do not use gramflour (besan) to thicken the consistency.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Yogurt
  • 1 1/2 Cups Water
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric pd
  • 1 tsp Ginger (chopped)
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 tsp Fenugreek (methi) pd
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 2 Whole Red Chilies (dried)
  • 1 whole Shallot (or 1 tsp of onion)

Preparation

  1. Blend the yogurt along with water, ginger, garlic, turmeric pd., fenugreek pd., and ½ tsp. cumin in a blender. Take it out in a saucepan and on low to medium flame, put in on the stove and keep stirring gently for about 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small frying pan, heat 1 tsp. oil. Add the broken red chillies, mustard seeds, remaining ½ tsp. cumin seeds and the fenugreek seeds. Add onions and fry them till it is fully brown. Add all this into the saucepan and gently simmer for a few more minutes until everything blends together. Keep stirring constantly. Serve with rice.
